One of the most growing businesses in India is packaged mineral water. There is no account of companies mushrooming as mineral water providers. The government has proven weak to hold accountability or laws for these companies. Though the companies are expected to follow a line of rules and standard but nothing substantial seems to be done. There are many Indian and multinational companies which have brand packaged mineral water. They have entered the Indian market big way and sold themselves well through advertisements by celebrities. The low quality and poor standards maintained by the big names in the bottled water and soft drinks sector have been severely exposed in recent years in India. Still the there is no regard for the public health and same continues to follow. samples collected from the top five brands of big companies (Bisleri, Bailley, Pure Life, Aquafina, and Kinley, the last three brands manufactured by Nestle, Pepsi and Coca Cola respectively) were found to contain excessive quantities of pesticides. These tests were conducted by the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) which exposed that the bottled water of most of the brands contained pesticide residues that are harmful to health. The revelation was shocking news to the country. The CSE had conducted these laboratory tests on 34 samples of 17 different brands of bottled water that are commonly sold in the national capital region of Delhi.
It was a shock again when in 2003 the aereated drinks from the top brands like PepsiCo and Coca cola were proven to have pesticides. The revelations by the CSE show that the total pesticides were 36 times higher in the PepsiCo brands and 30 times higher in Coca Cola brands of soft drinks when compared to the EEC limit. These pesticides were similar to the ones found in the mineral water in the earlier investigation.
